Up In The Air

June 18, 2011

 你如果喜歡<up in the air>,你一定會愛上George Clooney在劇中的角色。 (For more information, http://blog.yam.com/YenC/article/31188976)

How much does your life weigh?

Imagine for a second that you’re carrying a backpack. I want you to pack it with all the stuff that you have in your life… you start with the little things. The shelves, the drawers, the knickknacks, then you start adding larger stuff. Clothes, tabletop appliances, lamps, your TV… the backpack should be getting pretty heavy now. You go bigger. Your couch, your car, your home… I want you to stuff it all into that backpack.

Now I want you to fill it with people. Start with casual acquaintances, friends of friends, folks around the office… and then you move into the people you trust with your most intimate secrets. Your brothers, your sisters, your children, your parents and finally your husband, your wife, your boyfriend, your girlfriend. You get them into that backpack, feel the weight of that bag.

Make no mistake your relationships are the heaviest components in your life. All those negotiations and arguments and secrets, the compromises. The slower we move the faster we die. Make no mistake, moving is living.

Some animals were meant to carry each other to live symbiotically over a lifetime. Star crossed lovers, monogamous swans. We are not swans. We are sharks.

Life’s better with company.

And everyone needs a place called home.

  • General Management Skills.

The GM here doesn’t mean ppl. mgmt skill, instead, meaning your thinking toward the business architecture.  Since “general”, you have to step back and try to view things in an overall perspective. Your challenge is always “balance”, rather than “purely get things done”.

  • Change management.

Change management is a means that western ppl. systemized Chinese politics into science. It’s tough to lead the TIGER  team, especially for teams composed of lots of young busy talents. You got 7 team members on day 1, however, months passed, 1 ppl. left the company, 2 ppl. r off the hook, 2 ppl. keep outputing minimal, 2 ppl. working hard for the project. The proportion may keep the same, but different names may jump between groups in the meantime.

The key question here is how to perfectly achieve goal without perfect people and perfect committed resource. Since this not only happens in TIGER program, this happens every momoent when you’d like to lead a change in a big organization.

Eventually, I got my teammates dedicated lot more as 3 ppl. devote themselves into this project and 3 ppl. keep the reactive support with decent quality. Not only the result but also the team chemistry is highly appreciated by executive members.

It’s very similar to what I’ve done in entreprenuer but way harder due to politics. Just give some bullet points here, and we could have further discussion on another day.
